I had the great honor to stay at Shakespeare and Company in the summer of 1987 and to get to know the late George Whitman. I began my stay as a “Tumbleweed” in the Beach Library upstairs. But when George realized I could build shelves and put locks on doors and such, he let me stay in his ex-wife’s chambre de bonne around the corner.
Most of these photographs center around one special day. While passing through Paris on their return to the United States, The Living Theatre gave a performance at the bookstore and hung out late into the night.
Ted Jones was still around in those day, and it was here that he introduced me to the beat writers that would so influence my later work.
